which mean white man in a hole, a reference to the European’s method
of housing out here.

the world, nearly 85% of all the opals in the world are mined
here.
The spectacular countryside around this outback town has been
described as “The Lunar Landscape” an apt description and one
you really have to experience, photos do not do it justice.
Created over 80 million years, the Painted Desert in South Australia, distinct from Painted
Desert in Arizona is just as spectacular with its multi-hued terrain. The effects of erosion
on the residue from an ancient inland sea and the leaching of minerals in the soil, together
lend the myriad colors one sees today. Located towards the north-east of Coober Pedy.
